Chemical immobilization and anesthesia of free-ranging terrestrial mammals introduces unique challenges compared to anesthesia of domestic species. These include the inability to access patients for preanesthetic evaluation, the availability of few effective drug protocols, limited species-specific information, capture-associated conditions or injuries, extreme environmental conditions and hazards, fewer options for provision of supportive care in the field, and risks to human safety. This chapter provides a broad overview of considerations for planning field anesthesia, principles of remote drug delivery, pharmacology of drug combinations, options for patient monitoring, supportive care and recovery, and prevention and management of complications related to wildlife capture. The reader is referred elsewhere for more detailed species-specific information and drug doses.
