Abstract

Biological control is a method of pest control involving live beneficial agents targeting pests, weeds and pathogens for human benefit. In cases where resident biocontrol agents alone are not capable of controlling pests, additional agents may be released to minimize pest damage. Release of agents for temporary control is called augmentative biological control and is frequently used to protect crop plants. Release of exotic agents for permanent establishment and control is called classical biological control. Both of these methods can be powerful means of efficient and sustainable pest control, but they may also create ecological, economic, and health risks.
