Abstract

Preface These proceedings compromise the programme and abstracts of presentations of the workshop ’Knowledge gaps in soil C and N interactions’ held on the 2nd-5th June 2008 at Uppsala, Sweden. The workshop is intended to discuss all kinds of knowledge gaps in soil C and N interactions, ranging from “We know what we don’t know”, “We don’t know what we know” to “We will never know” according to Bouma’s definitions (Adv. Agron. 88, 67-97). Hopefully, we will also increase the awareness of gaps that can be described as “We don’t know what we don’t know yet”. The aims of the workshop are: i) Identify knowledge gaps in soil C and N interactions ii) Discuss possible reasons, obstacles and consequences of knowledge gaps iii) Formulate hypotheses to address the identified knowledge gaps iv) Outline experiments or simulation modules to test the formulated hypotheses The workshop covers the following themes: 1. Greenhouse gases and their relations to climate change 2. Factors influencing SOM stability 3. Impacts of roots on C and N processes 4. Plant uptake and utilization of organic nitrogen 5. Modeling the measurable and measure what should be modeled? 6. Scaling issues, uncertainty and error sources - Where is it really important to get it right? The workshop is organized by the graduate school ‘Focus on Soils’ of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. This is the last activity organized by this school. Since 2002, Focus on Soils has organized a great number of PhD-courses and workshops. Several members of the scientific committee have also been active in the steering committee of the graduate school. We wish to use this occasion to thank all members of the steering committee: Prof. Marianne Clarholm, Prof. Ingvar Nilsson, Prof. Tryggve Persson, Mats Nilsson, and the different PhD-representatives during the years, among them Mats Larsbo, Lars Rosenqvist, Karin Ljung, Anna-Ida Jonsson and Kristin Boye. The directors of studies have been Assoc. Prof. Erik Karltun, Assoc. Prof. Annemieke Gärdenäs and Dr. Johan Stendahl. Special thanks to them. Now it’s time for the workshop we all have been looking forward to so much! On behalf of the scientific committee, we wish to thank all the participants, especially the keynote speakers, for their contributions, the scientific committee for carefully preparing the programme, and Annika Lundberg (SLU) and Eva-Lena Jonsson (Eklundshof) for their commitment. SLU generously sponsored the workshop. We wish you all an inspiring time with fruitful discussions. We hope that at least some knowledge gaps will be narrowed.
