The purpose of this review study was to get an overview of the environmental impact of European pig production, to identify major hot-spots of the systems and to discuss available mitigation options. The data in the overview part of the study originates from ten European life cycle assessment (LCA) studies on pig production, with a total of 17 scenarios. To make the studies comparable, the results for the different impact categories were recalculated to the same units and the functional unit was harmonized to 1 kg of bone-free meat. The results illustrates that the overall feed efficiency is important to keep envi-ronmental impacts low. To achieve this, high feed conversion ratio, making the “in vivo” feed losses small (healthy animals, phase feeding, efficient breeds, etc.) and low losses of feed in the pre-feeding phase from high standards in the post-harvest chain (drying/storage/packaging/distribution/etc.) are important
