A system for individual recognition of laying performance in groups of hens is tested and described. A transponder system is used to separate and record individuals when they enter the nest and a switch records the eggs as they roll into egg collecting tubes. The sequential order of the eggs makes it possible to identify them to the identity of the laying hens. Three groups of 15-20 individuals were tested in succession during 12 weeks each. In total, 89% of the hens accepted the nests. Of these, 92% of the laid eggs were successfully collected into the tubes and identified. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
