Back to the Future: Landscape and Planning History as a Means to Understand Modern Landscapes

Qviström, M.

Abstract

One of the major challenges within contemporary planning is to find ways to foster sustainable development and multifunctional use of peri-urban landscapes. However, planning is powerless without a thorough understanding of the processes shaping the land. Furthermore, there is a need for methods for landscape analysis, providing an interface between landscape studies and planning. In a peri-urban context, limited understanding of the processes shaping the land and a shortage of methods for peri-urban landscape analysis are major problems (Qviström et al. 2007). Within the discourse concerning the European Landscape Convention, the importance of integrative landscape analyses that incorporate different aspects of landscape values and potentials has been emphasized.
