Kryptosporidios - kor är en smittkälla för kalvar

Silverlås, Charlotte; de, Verdier Kerstin; Björkman, Camilla

Abstract

Cryptosporidium parvum is a protozoan parasite associated with neonatal diarrhoea in calves. Infected calves shed large numbers of C parvum and are the largest source of infection for other calves. Cows can be subclinically infected, shedding low numbers of the parasite and can possibly act as a source of infection for calves. We describe a case where the farmer had just rebuilt his barn from tie stall to free stall. No separate pens were yet built for calves at the time of sampling, and the two calves present in the herd lived with the cows. One of five sampled cows and one of the calves were found to shed C parvum, which implies that cows were the probable source of infection for the calf
