A new class of RNA, called Class I RNA, was identified in Dictyostelium discoideum in 2004. RNAs of this abundant class is 55-65 nt and characterized by conserved 5’ and 3’ ends. The RNAs are mainly cytoplasmic and slightly down regulated during development. Class I RNA genes are preceded by a putative promoter sequence also found in front of many ncRNA in Dictyostelium. To our knowledge there are no homologues in other organisms and the function is unknown (1,2). A number of techniques have been used in our attempt to reveal the function of this class of RNA. Our model organism is Dictyostelium discoideum, an amoeba that grows as single cells but enters a developmental program upon starvation and form a multicellular organism
