Abstract

Claw and leg injuries resulting in lameness are of major concern to the dairy industry. The importance of the problem increases with more intensive production, larger units, and more automatized operations like the milking robot. There are many straggling risk factors involved in the development of lameness, such as genetics, nutrition, management, foot trimming and housing. Among the housing factors the physical as well as the biological environment are of concern. The animals’ general and immunological resistance and behaviour predicts the development and severity of the lesions. Especially flooring and, indirectly, lying conditions and the time of exposure of these specific areas are crucial
