Värmlands säby: bestånds- och rotutveckling efter yttäckning och strukturkalkning på en slamningsbenägen torkkänslig mellanlera

Heimer, Anders

Abstract

The development of a barley crop was investigated in a field experiment at Värmlands Säby on the eastern shore of Lake Väner in Sweden. The soil is a clay loam and the organic matter con tent is very low (about 1 % in the top soil). Crops grown on this soil are often very sensitive to drought, since the soil structure inhibits root growth and root penetration. Covering the surface of a field plot with humus rich sand (10 % organic matter, 50 % coarse sand and 40 % fine sand, silt and clay) stimulated root growth. However, the structure of the entire profile has to be stabilized to ensure satisfactory yields. The organic matter content must be increased by growing deep-rooting crops and by mixing organic material into the upper layers of the soil. Liming (10 tons CaO/ha) stabilizes the aggregates in the surface layer and improves the moisture status of the soil. Nitrogen mineralization increased following lime application and biomass production was greatest in limed plots. However, mulching with humus rich sand was more beneficial in terms of yield, partly because it stimulated rapid growth in the early stages of crop development. In mulched plots, the yield of barley-grain was 6,130 kg/ha, which was 230 kg/ha more than the yield of untreated plots. Limed plots yielded 520 kg/ha less than mulched. However, crop lodging resulted in high grain losses at combine and actual grain production in the field may have been as high as on mulched plots. The summer of 1984, when these experiments were carried out, was unusually wet in June and differences between treatments would presumably be greater in a "normal" year
