Three groups of organic pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), phenols and phthalates, from which a total of 24 compounds were chosen, were analyzed in soil, pig slurry, sewage sludge and in grains cropped with these fertilizers. In the pig slurry, compounds such as phenol, cresol and dibutyl phthalate were present at significant concentrations, while in the sewage sludge, high levels of phenol, cresol nonylphenol and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) were found. The analysis of the grains showed that PAH's and phenols were present at the same low concentration level independent of the fertilizer treatment. No uptake of nonylphenol through grains was detected. However, phthalates were found at somewhat higher concentrations in grains when applied with pig slurry and sewage sludge. Uptake percentages of added phthalates through grains were 0.1 to 0.2 %.
