China’s forest sector - A literature review

Roos, Anders; Törrö, Mari; Rönnberg, Jonas

Abstract

The increasing significance of the growing Chinese forest sector has become a central topic for the global forests science community. As the most populated country in the world reaches extremely high economic growth figures, the forest sector is affected in various ways. New trade flows emerge and China’s policy sets new priorities for its forest policy. The development offers exciting opportunities as well as problems and lessons regarding how forests can be used and managed. The fast development also triggers a need for more knowledge about the Chinese forestry sector, how it is developing and how it may influence countries in the sub-region and even the global forest sector in the future. The Faculty of Forestry Sciences at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) has initiated a more coordinated collaboration with Chinese colleagues. Contacts and collaboration on forest issues have of course been conducted since a long time between China and Sweden. Nevertheless, as this collaboration is expected to increase and intensify, there is a need to summarise some important facts on the Chinese forestry sector for researchers, students and possibly the Swedish forest industry with interests for China. This publication is mainly an overview of economic and policy issues regarding the forests and forest use in China. We are aware of the fact that several other issues of great importance for the forests in China, e.g. production and management methods of the forest resource, or forests and the environment, are not considered in this publication. We are confident though, that there are other excellent publications on each of these subjects. The authors wish that this short introduction will facilitate the professional dialogue and co-operation between Swedish and Chinese forest scientists and contribute to future joint research projects
