Potential for extending Scandinavian wine cultivation

Gustafsson JG, Martensson A

There is increasing interest in alternative land uses within Scandinavian agriculture. Such an alternative is viticulture. In this review, predicted advantages and problems regarding a successful expansion of grapevine cultivation in cool climate regions are discussed. By applying grape varieties well adapted to ripening under cool conditions and/or during short seasons, by vine training, pruning techniques and cultivation measures to improve plant protection for cold winters, successful vine cultivation is concluded to be possible under prevailing cool climatic conditions in Scandinavia
