Participant Research in Communication between Research and Practice

Lieberg, Mats

Abstract

The dialogue between researchers and practitioners has mainly taken place in special “knowledge workshops” (kunskapsverkstäder). The concept workshop is a collective term for different “platform techniques”. The main characteristics of these techniques are that they raise complex and certain issues, involving several actors – often with different backgrounds and areas of competence – put attention on conflicts of interests and values and have the goal of creating a safe atmosphere for communication. The paper discus possibilities as well as obstacles in the communication between research and practice, with special emphasis on different forms of knowledge developed in these kinds of dialogues processes. Examples from Swedish collaborative research projects will be presented. Research and practice is not regarded as two different cultures or areas of languages. Focus is rather on the dialogue between different cultures within sciences, between sciences and practice and between different areas of professional practice
