Tomarps trädgård och dess vattenanläggningar: ett tvärvetenskapligt trädgårdshistoriskt projekt

Jakobsson, Anna; Nordgren, Boel

Abstract

Tomarp's garden and its waterfeatures - an interdisciplinary garden history project Tomarp is situated in north western Scania (Skåne) and has been a Swedish royal estate since 1660. Near the main building and further out in the grounds of the estate are several ponds, and it is known that there were even more ponds and other water features during the 17th and 18th centuries. The main aim of this project was to find out exactly where some of these ponds were situated, namely the ones in Stora Trädgården/'The Great Garden' close to the main building. The project was divided into three parts. The first part consisted of an archival, map and literature study concerning the water features of the estate of Tomarp as a whole. Meanwhile a plant inventory was carried out in Stora Trädgården. Part two consisted of a survey with Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) in Stora Trädgården, and finally a garden archaeological analysis, based on the first two studies, was carried out. The combination of survey methods and different professional qualifications amongst the participants was an advantage when trying to interpret the findings. The studies confirm some things that were known or presumed before, and they also give new perspectives on the water features of Tomarp. The exact positions of the ponds are still uncertain, but we know where archaeological excavations could be useful and ought to be carried out in the future.
