Our knowledge on bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) has broadened in the past few years due to intensive molecular biological research. The taxonomy of pestiviruses has significantly changed, and the heterogeneity of BVDV proved to be more complex than it was thought earlier, which can cause problems during the control of the disease. The authors summarise the recent scientific results concerning genomic regions responsible for BVDV replication, the possibility of BVDV attenuation, as well as the genetic base of cytopathogenicity. They mention the results of the examinations on Hungarian cytopathogenic (cp) BVDV isolates, which can be useful for the better understanding of the mechanism of cytopathogenicity, and in connection with the use of a live attenuated BVDV vaccine, prove the necessity of the molecular biological methods in vaccine control. The different pathogenesis of the two biotypes are also detailed, which proves that the non-cytopathogenic (ncp) biotype is a perfect adaptation of BVDV to the host. The new findings may contribute to the better understanding of the life cycle of BVDV and to the faster and more sensitive detection of the virus, as well as to the more sophisticated control of the disease
