Assessing the Sustainability of Innovations in Urban Ecological Sanitation: Erdos Eco-town Project

McConville, J.; Rosemarin, A.; Li, Z.; Flores, A.

Abstract

The China-Sweden Erdos Eco-town Project was a first bold attempt to install dry urine-diverting sanitation systems in new multi-story buildings at a relatively large-scale level of implementation. The project has been in some ways a "living laboratory" for the ca 3000 inhabitants housed in the 832 apartments in 42 buildings. The design of the system was part of a vision for a sustainable urban future with improved efficiency in water consumption and reuse of nutrient resources. However, to achieve sustainability the various system components including technical, institutional and social aspects, need further improvements. This paper critically analyses the sustainability of the project and offers lessons for future implementation of more sustainable sanitation systems.
