Osteomyelitis secondary to basilar skull fracture in a thoroughbred foal

Abstract

A 6-month-old Thoroughbred filly was admitted following a backward fall during hoof trimming. Just after the fall epistaxis occurred, but this had stopped quickly. Now a purulent nasal discharge had appeared together with incoordination and stiffness in the occipital region and neck. PathoIogical findings included osteomyelitis in the suture line between the occipital and the basisphenoidal bone. Two fistulas originated from this process with associated discharge showing S. zooepidemicus. Fractures in this region are most likely to occur in young horses. Only conservative treatment is available. Early diagnosis and Vigorous antibiosis are imperative in such cases as infection may spread from the injured guttural pouch.
