Discrete event simulation as a performance analysis tool in agricultural logistics systems

Nilsson, Daniel

Abstract

This paper presents a discrete event simulation model for analysing the performance and costs of straw and reed canary grass (RCG) logistics systems. The straw and RCG were used as fuels in a district heating plant for generation of hot water. The model, which was called SHAM (Straw Handling Model), follows the fuels from the fields via stores and heating plant to delivery ofhot water. Some results from simulations with different machinery combinations, fuel proportions and storage capacities are presented, together with a discussion about advantages and limitations when applying this type of simulations on agricultural logistics systems.
