The Swedish County Administrative Boards and the Swedish National Phenology Network have developed an indicator – the Plant Growing Season – for the Swedish Environmental Objectives using observations from professional and volunteer observers of nature’s calendar. As a baseline for the Swedish phenology indicators, the National Phenology Network has digitized and quality-controlled a large, nation-wide database of standardized observations collected between 1873–1951. The database consists of over 345 000 observations of plants, animals (mainly birds) and agriculture. The baseline used for the environmental assessment indicator is derived from a statistical analysis that includes information on latitude, altitude and distance to larger water bodies. In addition, the statistical model controls for the fact that the participating observation sites differed among years. The Swedish Botanical Society is a new member of the National Phenology Network. As a first project, the botanical society launches a campaign asking the public to report on how far spring has developed on the holiday of April 30 – May 1.
