Functional aspects of incompatible ectomycorrhizal associations

Finlay, Roger

Abstract

The functional capacity of incompatible associations betweenPinus sylvestris&Suillus grevilleiandPinus sylvestris&Boletinus cavipeswas evaluated with respect to differences in the efficiency of assimilate transport and phosphorus uptake in mixed communities ofP. sylvestrisandLarix eurolepisgrown in laboratory microcosms. Fungal colonization of lateral roots and accumulation of labelled assimilate from adjacent plants fed with14CO2was significantly greater in roots ofPinusplants when the ectomycorrhizal fungus wasS. bovinusand significantly greater inLarixroots when the fungus wasS. grevilleiorB. cavipes. Ectomycorrhizas formed betweenP. sylvestrisandB. cavipeswere fully functional in terms of transfer of labelled assimilate to the fungal mycelium. In mixed communities infected by ‘larch specific’ fungi, mycelial uptake and translocation of32P-labelled orthophosphate was significantly greater toLarixplants than toPinusplants. Although the levels of activity inPinusshoots were low, autoradiographic evidence of phosphorus translocation from mycorrhizal roots to stem and leaf tissue indicated that the mycorrhizas formed on these plants were qualitatively similar to those onLarixin terms of their ability to transfer mineral nutrients across the host-fungus interface.
