Plants well adapted for different purposes and regions are crucial for high quality and quality in forage production and thus beef/dairy farm profitability. SLU runs the official variety testing programme in Sweden. Characteristics important in utilizing inherent seasonal growing pattern, competiveness and overwintering capacity of species/varieties include: Role in cropping, grazing and feeding system; persistence; cutting and fertilizing regime. Interest has increased in both white clover for silage and ryegrasses but more knowledge is needed about autumn treatment. Other requirements include more specific quality evaluations, e.g. regarding water-soluble carbohydrates and condensed tannins for biodiversity, crop rotation, rumen processes and, ultimately, farm income. Finally, there is a need for coordinated specific testing of seed mixtures, which pose management and evaluation problems. Unfortunately, the agricultural sector is sometimes reluctant to introduce new species and varieties but this can hopefully be overcome by the growth of interest and knowledge among those concerned
