Urban gardening is now an issue of interest to many, including politicians, planners and grassroots activists, in the light of discussions on how we can construct sustainable cities. However, interest in urban gardening is not new, as various forms of food are grown in all Swedish urban areas and have been since the first cities were created. The question is simply what the cities of the future will contain. What role can urban gardening play in sustainable urban development? Is it possible to plan for future urban gardening and why should we do so? This report centres around urban gardening in the City of Malmö, but the discussion ranges beyond this to urban gardening in Swedish urban areas with an international outlook
