Sammanfattning

The importance of catchments is highlighted because of the EU Water Framework Directive and the land cover and land use characteristics exert crucial influences on the hydrology and water chemistry conditions. In large areas of the Nordic-Baltic region forest and forestry together with mires and peatland are the dominating land covers and land uses that result in various impacts on the water status. In Sweden a number of experiments followed by long-term monitoring of water conditions in relation to land cover and land use have been carried out. Forestry activities on mineral soils and peatlands have been investigated with respect to hydrology and water chemistry. Such are monitored and compared to the natural forested areas in the frame of the international cooperative programme on integrated monitoring of air pollution effects on ecosystems (ICP IM). The presentation will highlight the important impacts of land management related to changed hydrology and water quality. These conditions furnish good possibilities to compare unmanaged forest land with the man-made management
