Applied animal Andrology: Special Procedures

Morrell, Jane

Sammanfattning

This chapter focused on the assessment of sperm quality which involves an evaluation of motility and some other sperm characteristics.

The majority of the special procedures in this chapter are sperm quality analyses or sperm selection techniques to improve sperm quality. There are several reasons for determining sperm quality. Since sperm quality is linked to field fertility, breeding companies use quality control protocols at semen collection stations to discard ejaculates that do not reach certain thresholds to avoid sub-standard ejaculates being used for artificial insemination (AI). Sperm quality is also evaluated during a breeding soundness examination to determine if the animal is suitable as a stud male. In addition, sperm quality analysis is used in research, e.g. to compare different semen extenders, freezing protocols, or the effects of additives such as antioxidants on spermatozoa.

The assessment of sperm quality usually involves an evaluation of motility and some other sperm characteristics, as described in the following sections.
