Friction and abrasive characteristics of some walkway flooring materials in dairy housing

Nilsson, Christer; Magnusson, Madeleine; von, Wachenfelt Hans

Sammanfattning

Friction and abrasive characteristics of some walkway flooring materials in dairy housing were studied. The aim was to assess the characteristics of some novel materials and relate them to those of traditional designs. Friction was measured using a drag method and an SRT tester and for abrasiveness measurements a gypsum drag method was applied. Little differences in friction were found between the surfaces of concrete slats, solid concrete, and patterned solid concrete when measured with the drag tester and using an artificial polyethylene claw. The solid concrete floor with hexagonal pattern showed a somewhat higher friction than one with sawed diamond pattern and an un-patterned ones. Of the concrete floorings the hexagonal pattern also showed the highest abrasion. The SRT is not a good way of assessing the roughness of a floor. The applied plaster method showed results better agreeing with those found in practice. Although showing higher abrasion than rubber mats the mastic asphalt flooring was more slippery when measured with the drag method. The higher vertical load used in the measurements makes the method better explain the slipperiness experienced by the cow
