Periurbanity - a New Classification Model

Bocz György Ängelkott, Nilsson Christer, Pinzke Stefan

Sammanfattning

This study analyzes, and with a new classification model, redefines the “peri(-)urban” phenomenon of the developed countries: the result of the rapid technological and economic development and the following social changes since the 1970s, namely counterurbanization and the appearance of new settlement patterns. The findings -based on a literary overview and the analyzing of classifying theories of previous research- show that the defining possibilities are not fully utilized by the most common physical-spatial approach, although recently non-physical characteristics were also emulated in definitions. Existing definitions are not translated from one language to another adequately and the definitions of areas often overlap. City-near rural “trapped-areas” are considered only as future grounds for urbanization, and islands, like periurban settlements in the rural hinterland aren’t accounted for. Based on the findings, a new “customizable” modularly structured Urban Rural Defining Model (URDEM) is recommended, instead of a single definition. URDEM places the phenomena (e.g. periurbanity, suburbanity, etc.) and their movements into context by using input data from obligatorily and voluntarily included modules. As a result individually tailored flexible definitions are generated based on the use of a common curriculum framework that in turn allows compatibility. The results of this study may provide a basis for future studies, tools for the public sector (municipalities) and even for the entrepreneurial sphere (real estate developers, construction companies). The model is currently planned to be put to practical use in a municipal mapping project in Helsingborg City, in the South of Sweden
