The Relationship between Chrysanthemum flower diameter and light conditions in the greenhouse - a modelling approach

Nothnagl Margit, Larsen Rolf Uno

Sammanfattning

The influence of light in the greenhouse on the size of chrysanthemum flowers was investigated and a model was developed. In the model, flower diameter increment was related to a flower development index. It was shown that growth of the visible flower could be divided into two different phases. The first phase describes the growth and development of the early visible flower bud, while the second phase illustrates the opening process of the flower. A linear model gave a good fit for the first phase, whereas the second phase followed a monomolecular growth curve with a steep initial slope. The collected data showed that low light integrals had a retarding effect on flower growth resulting in smaller flowers. The model fitted the data well with R2 values ranging from 0.999 to 0.965
