Early methane and nitrous oxide emissions from food waste composting as affected by moisture

Ermolaev, Evgheni; Sundberg, Cecilia; Pell, Mikael; Jönsson, Håkan

Sammanfattning

In composting, substrate moisture is animportantparameter regulatingthe CH4 and N2O emissions. The effects ofmoisture on early emission peaksof CH4 and N2O were investigatedin 15 controlled compost experiments.Composting of food waste was performed in a 200-L laboratory reactor under controlled conditions with O2 concentration at 16%and initial feedstock moisture ranging from 51 to 68%. Early peak CH4 emissions from food and garden waste composts correlated with moisture content and were nearly 1000-fold higher in compost with 63% moisture compared to 33% moisture. The initial peak N2O emission in composts with moisture content in the range of 33-67% was larger in the drier composts.
