Arsenic in soil-plant systems: Comparison of speciation by chemical extractions and X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Herbert, R.B.; Landberg, T.; Persson, I.; Greger, M.

Sammanfattning

Cultivation experiments were conducted where the terrestrial plant lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and the emergent plant common cottongrass (Eriophorum angustifolium) were exposed to As during growth in soils and sediments, with the aim of determining the relative changes in As speciation that occurred during uptake from a soil, and oxidized mine sediment, and a reduced mine sediment. The chemical extractions and XANES of soils indicate that As is predominantly present as As(V); uptake and transport in the two plant species appears to result in a change in the As(V)-As(III) ratio, with relatively more As(III) in shoots and roots. This result is confirmed for cottongrass by XANES, but is not observed for lettuce. Plant species and environmental conditions appear to be important factors controlling As speciation.
