Acidification of natural waters has been caused by anthropogenic emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides. As areas previously exposed to anthropogenic acidification are recovering, there is evidence of increasing concentrations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aquatic environments. This raises concerns about destabilization of soil organic matter as well as increasing costs for drinking water supply. The increase in DOM has been attributed to both global warming and recovery from acidification.
