Sammanfattning

Biochar can make two key contributions to sustainable development, climate change mitigation as a carbon dioxide removal method, and to food security as a soil amendment. Several other potential co-benefits make it possible for biochar to contribute to the achievement of sustainability goals, in fields like waste management, water management, energy, and pollution reduction. The sustainable development goals stress not only the need for environmental sustainability at the planetary level, but also the necessity to provide the basic needs of all humans, a notion at the core of sustainable development. Here biochar has a role to play, as it is a material that can improve soil fertility and thus food production, which can be produced from locally available resources, through low-cost methods. To make a meaningful contribution to sustainable development, biochar practice needs to grow and its risks need to be managed, which requires biochar to be integrated into policies and regulations and to be adequately funded. Biochar projects need to be evaluated from the lens of sustainability and experiences disseminated, to enable learning and improvement. Biochar development needs to consider aspects that are important goals as well as means for sustainable development: education, gender, and social inclusion.
