A key element of any successful anesthetic procedure is to anticipate and prepare for potential complications. Careful consideration of potential complications prior to the anesthetic procedure will help improve outcomes when emergencies occur. This chapter provides a summary of considerations prior to an anesthetic or capture event. Prior to any capture event careful consideration should be given to the environment in which the event will take place. The reliability of a capture technique is a major consideration during the capture process. Sedative techniques may be used to capture and restrain wildlife, particularly wild ungulates. Anesthesia and immobilization of zoo and wild animals is a challenging field of veterinary anesthesiology. Airway support can be challenging during an immobilization event as the induction period may be prolonged and with many species it is important to ensure that the animal is safely anesthetized prior to approach. Equipment or drugs for humane euthanasia should be carried during animal captures.
