Sammanfattning

Wild relatives, landraces, and heirloom germplasm represent a unique reservoir of genetic diversity critical for improving crop domesticates. Genes and specific pathways associated with unique taste, texture and flavor were unlocked. Integrating this germplasm and knowledge into plant-breeding programs can lead to the development of food crops, including fruits and vegetables, with unique sensory and textural, nutritional value, and climate resilience. Every effort should be directed to preserving (in perpetuity) and exploiting these priceless genetic resources for the benefit of humanity.
