• Maintenance of functional networks of green space in urban landscape is a prerequisite for biodiversity conservation and human quality of life. • Interviews with urban planners and municipal decision-makers in cities, towns and rural areas were used to learn how green space is planned and managed. • Most Swedish municipalities have limited competence on how to achieve functional green space networks. • There is a poor connection between the strategic planning level and the operational management. • Politicians often prioritize economic development before biodiversity and other green issues in practical planning. • To improve the situation it is important with good relationship between politicians and urban planners. • A major challenge is to establish societal platforms for communication among actors and stakeholders in the planning process, and to improve the spatial planning
