Sammanfattning

In the range of nitrite concentrations episodically generated in N-enriched running waters, nitrite has a detrimental effect on the freshwater sponges Ephydatia muelleri and Spongilla lacustris in the laboratory. At pH 7 and nitrite concentrations of 0.75 mg/l NO2-N and higher, the hatching rate of gemmules of Ephydatia muelleri decreases. At pH 6, 1.5 mg/l NO2-N causes malformations in tissue and spicules of Spongilla lacustris. At pH 5 and 1.5 mg/l NO2-N, hatching of both Ephydatia muelleri and Spongilla lacustris stops
