Sammanfattning

BREEAM Communities is one of several international assessment systems that are increasingly being used in urban planning by different kinds of professionals. The systems are likely to affect the practices of urban planners, but have been criticised for achieving an uneven result when it comes to sustainable development. Therefore it is important to explore the underlying planning concept. The aim of this paper is to examine BREEAM Communities. To limit the study it has only been examined with respect to the parts that deal with ecosystem services. The result shows conflicts between how different issues are assessed. Even though the idea is to provide a universal and transparent methodology the system is to a large extent based on involved professionals’ personal sets of values. There is also a lack of methods to handle conflicting goals. This possible shift of spatial planning process needs further attention.
