Sammanfattning

Various methods of weed control (black fabric, black plastic, wood chips, herbicides and mechanical or hand weeding) were evaluated in Japanese quince orchards during 1999 in Lithuania and Sweden and during 2000 in Latvia. Synthetic mulches provided the most efficient weed control and improved plant growth and yield. Wood chips resulted in nitrogen deficiency. Herbicides, i.e. Goltix [metamitron] (3 litres/ha), Betanal Progress AM [desmedipham+ethofumesate+phenmedipham] (2 litres/ha), Lontrel 300 [clopyralid] (0.3 litres/ha) and glyphosate (3 litres/ha), improved the growth of young plants
