EFSA was invited by the the EU Commisson to draw up an opinion on the welfare aspects of the various systems of keeping layring hens described in coucil Directive 1999/74/EC and enriched cagesin particular. The implications of these systems towards obtaining safe eggs for consumers were also to be considered
